Undersecretary for Global Affairs Minna-Liina Lind meets with Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Maitama Tuggar

Undersecretary for Global Affairs Minna-Liina Lind was on a visit to Ghana and Nigeria from 18 to 21 March. Undersecretary Lind met with Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Maitama Tuggar in Nigerian capital Abuja to discuss Nigeria’s leading role in Africa, and the region’s challenges. It was the highest-level visit from Estonia to Nigeria to date. At the meeting, both parties affirmed that during these uncertain times, Estonia and Nigeria are like-minded on many global issues, standing up for international law and territorial integrity. “This is also demonstrated by Nigeria’s voting pattern in UN votes on resolutions concerning Ukraine,” Lind noted.

She also spoke to the Nigerian foreign minister about reinforcing bilateral relations, especially on e-governance and digitalisation. “We see great potential for cooperation with Nigeria and during our talks, we have found specific points for collaboration,” Undersecretary Lind said. In Nigeria, she also met with Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dunoma Umar Ahmed, Director for Bilateral Relations Obinna Onowu, and Regional Director Janet Olisa.

In Ghana’s capital Accra, Undersecretary Lind met with Communication Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Foreign Ministry’s Undersecretary for Multilateral Relations and International Organisations Perpetua Dufu, and Alfred Nortey, the Director of Ghana’s Communication and Digital Affairs Ministry.

Lind’s meeting with her Ghanaian colleagues focused on bilateral relations, the security situation in the Sahel region, and the global impact of Russia’s war of aggression. Discussions also covered boosting cooperation on digital affairs and green technologies. “Despite our geographic distance, Ghana and Estonia are close partners upholding democratic values, media and internet freedom, and respect for international law,” Undersecretary Lind said.
