Comment by Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna regarding the US strike on Iranian nuclear facilities

With today’s strike on Iranian nuclear facilities, the United States has demonstrated its determination to halt Iran’s nuclear programme. Both the US and Europe have repeatedly emphasised: Iran must not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons.

Restricting Iran’s nuclear capabilities is a matter of global security. Over the years, we have witnessed close cooperation between Iran and Russia, which affects not only the Middle East but also has implications for European security – particularly in the context of the war in Ukraine.

It is essential that the situation does not escalate into a broader conflict in the region and that the protection of civilians remains a priority for all parties. Resolving the situation calls for a return to negotiations. The international community must work together to ensure long-term security in the region.
