Today, Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna met with his Moroccan colleague Nasser Bourita, who is on a visit to Tallinn, and discussed closer bilateral political and economic relations, Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, and the global security situation.
It was the first visit to Estonia by a Moroccan foreign minister. Tsahkna said that Morocco was a good partner for the European Union and NATO, and recognised Morocco for the assistance it has provided to Ukraine. He added that Estonia and Morocco shared a keen interest in innovation and digitalisation. “The relations of Estonia and Morocco have gained new momentum and I want to deepen our contacts further.”
“Last year, when I visited Rabat, we spoke about the possibilities for boosting digital cooperation and I am happy to continue this discussion in Tallinn today. Estonia is ready to support Morocco on its digitalisation journey,” Tsahkna said, adding that Morocco played a key role between Africa and Europe.
They also discussed the security situation in Europe, Middle East and Africa. Tsahkna underlined that Estonia contributed where possible and as much as possible. Speaking about Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, Tsahkna said that Russia had not given up its imperialist ambitions. “I condemn all efforts to normalise Russia’s attempts at undermining Ukraine’s sovereignty and global security because Russia does not plan on stopping in Ukraine.”
Touching upon the situation in Western Sahara, Tsahkna said that Estonia supported the UN’s leading role in finding a just, pragmatic, and lasting solution that was acceptable for all parties. “Estonia considers the autonomy proposal submitted by Morocco to the UN Secretary General in 2007 a credible basis for finding a solution.”
Talking about the situation in the Middle East, Tsahkna said that Estonia stood for finding a lasting solution for the region. The ministers also spoke about developments in Syria.
“I consider the cooperation of the EU and Morocco crucial for addressing global and regional crises and threats together,” Tsahkna said.
