Foreign Minister Tsahkna meeting with Moldova’s Deputy Prime Minister Gherasimov: Estonia’s support for Moldova’s EU accession is strong, proven by the opening of our embassy in Moldova

Today, 12 February, Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna met in Tallinn with Moldova’s Deputy Prime Minister and Chief Negotiator for European Union accession, Cristina Gherasimov. The discussions focused on Moldova’s EU accession process and cooperation in countering Russian influence activities.

At the meeting, Foreign Minister Tsahkna reaffirmed that Estonia’s support for Moldova’s European Union integration is firm and consistent. “The victory of democratic and pro-European forces in last September’s parliamentary elections clearly demonstrated that the people of Moldova see their country’s future in the European Union,” he stressed.

“Moldova has made significant progress on its path towards accession, and Estonia stands ready to continue sharing its experience with Moldovan partners.”

According to Tsahkna, the opening of the first cluster of negotiating chapters with Moldova should take place in parallel with Ukraine. “Both countries are ready to take the next bold steps towards EU membership,” he said. “Opening the clusters simultaneously would send a strong signal from the European Union that both countries have a clear and secure place in Europe’s future.” The strength of the European Union lies in its ability to evolve and enlarge. This is not merely a technical process, but a strategic political decision, to which Estonia will continue to give its firm support.

The meeting also addressed Russian influence activities in Moldova. The foreign minister noted that although Russia’s attempts to interfere in last September’s elections were unsuccessful, hybrid attacks, the spread of disinformation and attempts to divide society remain a serious problem. “Our task is to continue supporting Moldova so that Russia’s efforts to divert the country from its pro-European course are thwarted,” Tsahkna emphasised.

Estonia also plans to open its embassy in Chișinău in the summer of 2026.
