Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna visits South America

From 4 to 8 November, Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna is on a visit to South America, visiting Argentina, Chile and Colombia.

“While there is an ocean between Europe and South America, security in our respective regions is connected in many ways,” Tsahkna said ahead of the visit.

The foreign minister said Russia’s aggression in Ukraine had a negative impact on South America, mainly on food security and energy prices, but the long-term impact will depend on how Russia’s aggression ends.

“To ensure security around the world, it is vital that Russia exits the war of aggression weaker than it was starting it, and that Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty are restored,” Tsahkna said.

The foreign minister emphasised that in light of growing conflicts and an increasingly tense global security situation, cooperation between like-minded democracies was crucial. “I believe that my visit to South America contributes to a better understanding of the challenges these countries are facing, and finding opportunities for cooperation both bilaterally and in international organisations,” Tsahkna said.

Bilateral meetings will cover security issues, Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and cooperation opportunities on digital and cyber affairs. In Argentina, the focus is on working on the fifth point in Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Peace Formula, which concerns the validity of the UN Charter and restoring Ukraine’s territorial integrity, which Estonia and Argentina are co-chairing.

The agenda also includes the opening of an honorary consul’s office in Buenos Aires, attending the high-level Digital Alliance dialogue of the European Union and Latin America and the Caribbean in Chile’s capital Santiago, and the first global conference in Colombian capital Bogotá on ending violence against children.
