Today 19 March, Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna met with Kim Hong Kyun, First Vice Foreign Minister of the Republic of Korea, who is on a visit to Tallinn, and gave a speech at the opening of the Republic of Korea embassy.
At the meeting with Kim, Tsahkna said that the opening of the Republic of Korea’s embassy in Tallinn was an important milestone in the relations of Estonia and the Republic of Korea. “Despite the geographic distance between us, Estonia and the Republic of Korea have a lot in common,” Tsahkna noted.
“I highly appreciate our friendship and hope to expand it over time,” he added. They also discussed ways of boosting economic and defence cooperation. The meeting also covered global security, including Russia’s aggression in Ukraine and the situation on the Korean Peninsula. “North Korea is directly contributing to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and they continue to boost military cooperation. This affects the security of us all.”
At the opening ceremony of the embassy of the Republic of Korea, Tsahkna underlined that the history of Estonia and the Republic of Korea has taught us the importance of the rules-based international order, the right to self-determination, and territorial integrity. “Today, as we are facing several global crises, it is more important than ever to make a joint effort to defend these principles.”
