According to Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna, the Hungarian people clearly chose the direction of the rule of law and Europe in yesterday’s elections, marking a historic moment for both Hungary and Europe as a whole.
“The election result creates a new and significant opportunity within the European Union to restore and strengthen constructive cooperation with Hungary,” Tsahkna said. “Europe needs unity today, and the clear choice made by the Hungarian people offers renewed hope in this regard.” According to Tsahkna, Estonia looks forward to working with Hungary’s new government, with a shared interest in ensuring that decisions strengthening European security can move forward from the previous deadlock, which has also been influenced by Kremlin interests, particularly regarding support for Ukraine and EU enlargement.
“It is important that we can move forward swiftly with releasing the €90 billion loan package for Ukraine, adopting the 20th sanctions package, and making progress with the European Union’s enlargement process with Ukraine and Moldova. These decisions are critical for Europe’s security, stability and credibility and demonstrate Europe’s readiness to stand firmly for its values,” the foreign minister said.
“We also expect that the new political mandate will bring positive changes in Hungary’s approach to the rule of law. A strong rule of law, an independent judiciary and the protection of fundamental freedoms are the cornerstones of the European Union,” Tsahkna added.
According to Tsahkna, closer and more trust-based cooperation with Hungary will help strengthen the European Union as a whole, enhance our collective resilience, and support peace, security and democratic values in Europe.
