Today, 35 years ago, on 20 August 1991, Estonia restored its independence. The decision of 69 members of the Supreme Council reopened our path to the community of free nations and gave us the opportunity to build our country according to the vision of our people.
Over more than three decades, we have shown that a small state can be great in its actions. Estonia has built an innovative, democratic, and resilient rule‑of‑law state that stands for freedom, human rights, and international law. We are a trusted partner in the European Union and NATO, and a globally recognised digital nation where technology, entrepreneurship, and media freedom are world‑class. Behind all of this is the consistent work of the Estonian people and our diplomats, who keep Estonia strong, visible, and influential.
But today also reminds us that freedom is never guaranteed. It must be protected every day and everywhere, in words and in actions. For five years, Europe has lived with Russia’s full‑scale war of aggression against Ukraine, a grave violation of the principles of the rules‑based international order and international law.
Ukraine’s commitment to its freedom does not waver. They are fighting steadfastly not only for themselves, but for the future of all of Europe. Our own history teaches us how painful the loss of freedom can be. That is why it is our duty to stand with Ukraine, to defend a world order based on clear rules, and to ensure that all who violate those rules are held accountable.
Today, we can take pride in Estonia as an independent, democratic, and reliable global partner. But freedom must continue to be safeguarded — consistently, consciously, and together. Elagu Eesti!
