From 21 to 24 April, Martin Roger, Undersecretary for Political Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, visited Washington DC, where he met with his counterpart, Allison Hooker, Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, as well as other representatives of the U.S. government, both at the State Department and the National Security Council. Meetings were also held at Congress and in think tanks.
The visit focused on bilateral relations between Estonia and the United States, NATO’s central role in ensuring security in the Euro-Atlantic area, preparations for the NATO Summit, Russia’s war against Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, and other global security issues. In addition, discussions addressed the security situation in the Middle East and the Indo-Pacific region, as well as the impact of developments there on international stability.
During the meetings, Roger stressed the need to work towards transatlantic unity and affirmed that Europe will not tire of providing military and economic support to Ukraine, as demonstrated by recent EU decisions on a €90 billion loan and a sanctions package. He underlined that, from the perspective of European security, it is essential to continue supporting Ukraine and maintaining pressure on Russia.
Roger also highlighted Ukraine’s significant role and potential as an economic and security partner, noting that Ukraine is not merely a recipient of assistance, but also an important contributor to European security, ready to share its battlefield experience and technology, including in support of partners in the Middle East.
During the visit, the Undersecretary Roger also met with representatives of the Cuban-American community and discussed current developments in the Western Hemisphere with U.S. government officials.
