Today, 8 May, Minister of Foreign Affairs Margus Tsahkna met with the Chair of the EU Military Committee, General Sean Clancy, who is on a visit to Estonia. Their discussions focused on EU–NATO cooperation and the defence of the eastern flank, support for Ukraine, deterrence of the shadow fleet, and developments in the Middle East.
“In recent years, Estonia has significantly increased its defence investments, and it is very welcome that the Chair of the EU Military Committee will, during this visit, gain a thorough overview of Estonia’s efforts to strengthen its deterrence and defence posture,” Tsahkna said.
“Russia is and will remain the most serious threat to Europe for a long time, and it is therefore essential that European countries take the development of defence capabilities seriously,” the foreign minister added. “NATO is and will remain the cornerstone of collective defence, and the EU can do more than it has so far to strengthen NATO’s collective defence.”
Discussing support for Ukraine, Tsahkna noted that the EU’s EUMAM mission has made a significant contribution to training the Ukrainian armed forces and that this work should continue.
The European Union Military Committee is the highest military body within the EU, comprising the Chiefs of Defence of all member states.
