Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna met with Montenegro’s Minister of European Affairs Maida Gorčević in Tallinn today, 14 September. The meeting focused on Montenegro’s path towards EU
membership and Estonia’s support for making this happen as quickly as possible. The ministers also discussed developments in the Western Balkans, support for Ukraine and increasing pressure on Russia.
Tsahkna said that Montenegro has made significant progress in recent years and has reached a decisive stage on its path towards EU membership. “Montenegro has shown that consistent reforms deliver results. Now we need to move quickly forward with preparations for the accession treaty. Montenegro’s success sends a clear message to other candidate countries as well: the work you put in leads to membership,” Tsahkna said. He added that Estonia stands ready to support Montenegro on this path and share its practical experience of joining the European Union.
The ministers also discussed developments in the Western Balkans and Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine in greater detail. Tsahkna commended Montenegro for its consistent support for Ukraine. “A just and lasting peace will not come from making concessions to the aggressor. As long as Russia continues its war, we must give Ukraine everything it needs to defend itself and make it increasingly costly for Russia to continue its aggression,” he said.
The ministers also discussed bilateral relations between Estonia and Montenegro. Tsahkna noted that cooperation between the two countries has grown increasingly close in recent years and received further impetus this year with the visit of the President of Montenegro to Estonia.
