Today, the European Union decided to list the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation.
Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said that the decision strengthens Europe’s security and sends a clear message that systematic human rights violations and support for international aggression will bring consequences. “The European Union must continue to take a firm line against the Iranian regime, which is responsible for human rights violations at home and supports Russia’s aggression against Ukraine,” Tsahkna said.
The decision helps strengthen international accountability and supports those in Iran who stand for freedom and democracy. “We stand with Iranian civil society, independent media, and with the right of all people to live free from fear,” Tsahkna said, adding that sanctions have already been imposed on the IRGC in connection with Iran’s weapons of mass destruction programme, and that its subordinate entities and leadership have also been sanctioned individually.
Tsahkna added that Estonia conveyed a clear position in support of the Iranian people through yesterday’s statement by the Riigikogu, which condemns the Iranian regime’s systematic human rights violations and expresses support for the Iranian people’s aspirations towards freedom, democracy and the rule of law. “We will continue working together with the European Union and international partners to hold accountable human rights violators and those who threaten international security, and to support the Iranian people in their legitimate aspirations.”
