Today, 5 September, Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Jonatan Vseviov briefed more than fifty ambassadors accredited to Estonia on the country’s main foreign policy priorities for the coming season.
According to Vseviov, the international environment in the months ahead will remain turbulent, and Estonia will continue to play an active role in global politics. Estonia has often punched above its weight on the international stage, and we must stay on this path.
Vseviov underlined that Estonia’s foremost priority is comprehensive support for Ukraine at a time when Putin has not altered his goals. His ambition is not limited to a part of Ukraine but extends to the entire country, alongside a reordering of Europe’s security architecture.
Estonia is committed to ensuring that Ukraine receives the necessary support militarily, economically, and politically. Discussions are ongoing regarding the European Union’s 19th sanctions package, and Estonia supports the use of Russia’s frozen assets to aid Ukraine. Vseviov stressed that Ukraine’s victory is also essential for our own security.
Estonia is contributing to Ukraine’s reconstruction projects by engaging both Estonian and international companies, while also expanding cooperation with EU and NATO partners.
Vseviov also addressed the situation in the Middle East, affirming that Estonia’s consistent support for a two-state solution and the availability of humanitarian aid remains unchanged. Estonia has condemned Hamas’ actions and called for the release of hostages.
He also emphasised that Estonia aims to inject fresh momentum into its economy and diversify export markets, with increased attention on the Gulf states and Asian markets. The European Union provides stability and new opportunities, as demonstrated by progress on trade agreements with Mercosur and Mexico.
