Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Jonatan Vseviov was on a visit to New York on 13–14 April, where he held meetings with the ambassadors of the Philippines, China, Pakistan, Denmark, Syria, Ukraine, Singapore and several other countries to the United Nations, as well as with the European Union’s High Representative.
In addition, discussions were held with the President of the UN General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, and with senior UN officials responsible for peace and security, Jean-Pierre Lacroix and Mohamed Khaled Khiari.
During the meetings, Secretary General Vseviov emphasised the need to keep Ukraine consistently at the forefront of the international community’s attention. To this end, both General Assembly resolutions and Security Council discussions must be actively used.
Recent steps towards a ceasefire in the Middle East were also discussed, although the situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains fragile. Estonia is ready to discuss with its allies ways to ensure freedom of navigation and regional stability. According to the Secretary General, the continuation of the war has global negative consequences – it reduces resources available for supporting Ukraine and increases risks in strategically important regions, as well as for the global economy as a whole.
