Today 24 March, Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Jonatan Vseviov met with Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, the leader of the democratic forces of Belarus, and
gave a speech at the opening of the Tallinn representation of the democratic forces of Belarus. In addition to Estonia, the representation will also cover the Republic of Latvia.
At the meeting, Vseviov reaffirmed Estonia’s support for the Belarusian opposition and underlined that Estonia was working towards imposing additional sanctions on the Lukashenko regime and increasing its international isolation.
Last year, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs allocated €10 000 to support the democratic forces of Belarus. In 2023, Estonia appointed Marko Koplimaa as Estonia’s special representative to the democratic forces of Belarus, and at the opening ceremony, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya presented him with a decoration of the Belarusian democratic forces.
Estonia considers the 2020 and 2024 presidential elections in Belarus fraudulent and does not recognise the legitimacy of the Belarusian regime because the elections were conducted under the conditions of fear and systematic repressions. The Republic of Estonia also calls on the Belarusian regime to immediately and unconditionally end the repressions against is people and release all political prisoners.
