Ministry of Foreign Affairs organises a joint visit to Paris for secretaries general
On the initiative of Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Jonatan Vseviov, the secretaries general of ten Estonian ministries made a joint visit to Paris from 4 to 6 November.
Alongside Vseviov, the delegation included Secretary General of the Ministry of Justice Tõnis Saar; Secretary General of the Ministry of Culture Kristiina Alliksaar; Secretary General of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications Ahti Kuningas; Secretary General of the Ministry of Finance Merike Saks; Secretary General of the Ministry of Social Affairs Maarjo Mändmaa; Secretary General of the Ministry of the Interior Tarmo Miilits; Secretary General of the Ministry of Defence Kaimo Kuusk; Secretary General of the Ministry of Regional Affairs and Agriculture Marko Gorban; and Secretary General of the Ministry of Climate Keit Kasemets.
They had a joint meeting with Emmanuel Puisais-Jauvin, Adviser for the European Union of French Prime Minister Michel Barnier, and were briefed on France’s priorities in the EU. Anne-Sophie Dhiver, who is Deputy Head of the French service in charge of detecting and analysing foreign digital interference, spoke about fighting disinformation and foreign influence activities, and enquired about Estonia’s experiences in this domain. They also met with representatives of renowned think tanks in Paris and visited the Assemblée Nationale, the lower chamber of the French Parliament.
On the second day of the visit, Director-General of the OECD Mathias Cormann gave an overview of the organisation’s work on economy, public administration, climate protection, and education.
On the sidelines of the joint visit, the secretaries general had bilateral meetings with their French counterparts. Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Jonatan Vseviov met with his French colleague Anne-Marie Descôtes, France’s Minister for European Affairs Benjamin Haddad, and Xavier Chatel, Advisor for Strategic Affairs to French President Emmanuel Macron, to discuss bilateral relations, global security, Russia’s aggression and comprehensive support to Ukraine. Descôtes also organised a joint working lunch for the secretaries general of Estonia and France.
