Today, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs decided to allocate €122,478 to its strategic humanitarian partners to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Syria, with a particular focus on supporting people returning to their home country and the most vulnerable groups in the population.
“Years of war have severely damaged Syria’s infrastructure, disrupted the provision of essential services and undermined the functioning of society. At present, around 15.6 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance,” Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said.
“Estonia’s support will help improve living conditions and livelihoods for both local residents and people returning to their home country. In doing so, we are supporting stability and security in Syria and helping strengthen the resilience of the region, which is in the interests of both the European Union and Estonia.”
The Estonian Refugee Council will receive €80,000 to provide one-off cash assistance to 400 vulnerable households in the Babella subdistrict. The support will focus particularly on female-headed households and households that include orphans or people with special needs. The NGO Mondo will receive €42,478 to provide 250 people with special needs in Daraya and Homs with blankets, other winter essentials and basic hygiene supplies.
“Both partners have extensive experience supporting Syrian refugees in the region and established links with local organisations. The Estonian Refugee Council also has a local office. Their projects will help people prepare for winter, meet their basic needs and feel more secure,” said Tsahkna.
In addition, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs decided to allocate €50,000 to the Occupied Palestinian Territory Humanitarian Fund, managed by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), to support the delivery of rapid, flexible and needs-based humanitarian assistance in Gaza and the West Bank.
