On 13–14 April, Undersecretary for Political Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Martin Roger was on a visit to Chișinău, Moldova. During the visit, discussions focused on bilateral cooperation between Estonia and Moldova, Moldova’s security situation, issues related to EU enlargement, and regional developments.
Undersecretary Roger held political consultations with colleagues at the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and met the deputy prime minister responsible for the reintegration of Transnistria. He also met representatives of the President’s Office and the state secretary for European affairs.
According to Roger, Estonia strongly advocates for opening the first clusters of EU accession negotiations with Moldova and Ukraine as soon as possible. “Estonia supports reforms related to Moldova’s European integration, and we do so in close cooperation with other international partners and donors,” Undersecretary Roger said. “It is important to continue strengthening Moldova’s energy independence and its integration into European gas and electricity networks.”
“We saw very strong Russian interference ahead of last year’s parliamentary elections in Moldova, aimed at steering the country away from its pro-Western course, but the will of the Moldovan people to move forward towards the European Union prevailed,” Roger said. “Estonia will continue to actively support Moldova in reducing Russian influence and in developing the capacity of relevant institutions, including in strategic communication and crisis management. We also cooperate to share Moldova’s experience with other countries in the region, particularly its successful efforts in countering Russian influence.” According to Roger, Estonia also supports the imposition of sanctions on individuals and entities acting against Moldova’s independence and security.
