Government approves Estonia’s sanctions policy for Russia
Today, Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna submitted a proposal to the government to review and continue Estonia’s current sanctions policy for Russia.
Presenting the proposal, Tsahkna said that as Russia continues its brutal aggression in Ukraine and hybrid activities against the West and Putin’s aims have not changed, the only correct decision is to continue raising the cost of the war for Russia. “Sanctions must be in place until Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity have been restored within its internationally recognised borders and Russia has compensated Ukraine for the war damage,” he said. “In coordination with the EU and G7 states, we must reduce Russia’s revenue, limit the availability of goods and technologies that contribute to the aggression, and prevent circumvention.”
The EU has imposed 14 packages of sanctions against Russia, significantly reducing Russia’s financial options for waging war against Ukraine. “On the European Union level, we are continuing to work towards raising the cost of the war for Russia with economic sanctions and imposing sanctions on individuals connected to the aggression and hybrid activities,” Tsahkna said. “I expect an agreement soon on the 15th sanctions package.”
Tsahkna added that if EU sanctions are not imposed, Estonia and other border states are considering regional sanctions or, to protect our security and interests, Estonia can impose sanctions on its own.
The government approved the continuation of the current sanctions policy.
