Today, on 2 December, Secretary-General of the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Jonatan Vseviov, was on a visit to Berlin where he met with State Secretary Géza Andreas von Geyr, Head of the European Directorate at the Federal Chancellery Michael Clauß, and Henning Speck, Head of the Federal Foreign Office’s Executive Staff.
The discussions focused on ongoing talks regarding Ukraine, the need to provide sustained support, and raising the cost of Russia’s aggression. Secretary-General Vseviov stressed that Russia’s frozen assets must be swiftly utilized to aid Ukraine, and that the European Union should adopt a robust 20th sanctions package which includes further restrictions on Russia’s fossil fuel exports.
The meetings also addressed broader European security concerns. Vseviov praised Germany’s contribution to defending NATO’s eastern flank and highlighted the importance of strengthening the EU’s defence capabilities. He further emphasized that safeguarding Europe’s security requires the launch of EU accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova.
During the visit, the Secretary-General joined a panel at the Chatham House conference Europe’s Strategic Choices 2025, where discussions centered on strengthening Europe’s security architecture in the face of escalating hybrid threats.
