Today, 9 June, Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna met in Tallinn with his Ukrainian counterpart, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha. The discussions focused on Ukraine’s security, the need to increase pressure
on Russia, prospects for the peace process, Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, and Ukraine’s reconstruction.
Tsahkna reaffirmed that Estonia’s support for Ukraine remains steadfast and that we will stand by Ukraine until a just and lasting peace has been achieved and Russia has been held accountable for all its violations of international law.
“There are no signs of any change in Russia’s aggression,” Tsahkna stressed. “Putin’s decision to respond to President Zelenskyy’s proposal for peace talks by bombing Ukrainian cities clearly demonstrates that Russia does not want peace and has not abandoned its imperialist ambitions.”
“At a time when Putin’s behaviour is becoming increasingly erratic, we must not make any concessions. On the contrary, we must increase pressure on Russia, swiftly adopt a strong 21st sanctions package, and continue Russia’s isolation on the international stage. Peace cannot be achieved as long as Russia continues its military aggression and violations of Ukraine’s sovereignty.”
The meeting also addressed Ukraine’s progress towards European Union membership. Tsahkna stressed that all negotiating chapters should be opened as soon as possible. “Ukraine’s accession to the European Union is not only a security issue, but also an opportunity for Europe and its member states to learn from Ukraine’s experience and strengthen our collective resilience.”
The Foreign Minister added that Ukraine continues to defend the security of Europe as a whole, which makes it essential to ensure comprehensive support for the country both during the war and throughout the reconstruction period. “The foundation of a strong and democratic Ukraine lies in Western security guarantees and sustained investment in the country’s recovery. This is why Estonia will host the international Ukraine Recovery Conference in 2027, bringing together contributions from global partners to support Ukraine’s comprehensive and effective reconstruction.”
During a formal ceremony held as part of the visit, a bilateral agreement was signed under which two new Ukrainian honorary consuls will begin their duties in Estonia: entrepreneurs Siim Nellis and Allan Kaldoja in Tartu and in Narva respectively.
