On the evening of 22 July, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha held a phone call focused on Russia’s ongoing strikes against Ukrainian cities, civilian infrastructure, and civilian vessels and port facilities operating in the Black Sea. They also discussed possible steps to further increase pressure on Russia and strengthen support for Ukraine.
Tsahkna noted that in recent days, in addition to the systematic bombardment of Ukrainian cities, Russia has attacked 28 ships in the Black Sea, threatening regional stability, freedom of navigation, food supplies, and international trade routes. “The Kremlin’s decision to hold maritime routes hostage endangers the food security of the entire region and has a significant impact on the global economy,” he emphasized. “With these actions, Moscow is once again gravely violating international law, especially the principles of maritime law. The international community must unequivocally condemn Russia’s aggression.”
The foreign minister added that pressure on Russia must intensify and its political and economic isolation must continue. “At a time when the Kremlin shows not the slightest sign of abandoning its aggressive objectives, it would be irresponsible to make concessions or break its isolation. We must therefore continue imposing restrictions and sanctions and maintain pressure on Russia in international formats.”
Tsahkna stressed that support for Ukraine must continue, militarily, economically, and over the long term. “As the NB8 chair, Estonia stands firmly with Ukraine. This is also reflected in our preparations for the Ukraine Recovery Conference to be held in Tallinn in January.”
