According to Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna, NATO’s Arctic Sentry mission, launched today, 11 February, is an important step in strengthening the Alliance’s surveillance capabilities and military presence in the Arctic and North Atlantic region, and demonstrates NATO’s 360-degree approach to threats.
“Seven of the eight Arctic states are NATO Allies, and therefore the most effective way to strengthen deterrence and defence in the region is through joint Allied cooperation. The launch of Arctic Sentry is a step in the right direction,” Tsahkna said.
Arctic Sentry includes military exercises, enhanced surveillance, and the deployment of additional maritime and air assets in the region. The new mission brings together NATO and Allied activities in the Arctic and North Atlantic into a unified operational approach, integrating, among others, Denmark’s Arctic Endurance exercise and Norway’s Cold Response exercise.
“A strong and coordinated NATO presence in the North strengthens the security of the entire Allied area. The better prepared we are to operate in complex and demanding conditions, the more credible our deterrence will be,” the foreign minister said.
