On 15 October, Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna met with European Commissioner for Budget, Anti-Fraud and Public Administration, Piotr Serafin, who was visiting Estonia, to discuss the Commission’s proposal for the European Union’s long-term budget for 2028–2034.
According to the foreign minister, it is encouraging that the Commission’s proposal for the EU’s next seven-year budget — the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) — is larger than the previous one.
“Given the security situation and geopolitical developments, it is critically important that the EU’s new long-term budget is more substantial and includes resources to strengthen the defence and deterrence posture of member states, improve cross-border connectivity, and provide comprehensive support to Ukraine,” Tsahkna stated.
“For Estonia, key priorities include support for the development of the Rail Baltic rail connection and assistance to the eastern border states most affected by Russia’s war of aggression — not only in terms of defence, but also in addressing the economic and social impacts,” the Foreign Minister added.
The first broader discussion among member states on the EU’s next long-term budget will take place on 21 October at the General Affairs Council meeting in Luxembourg, where Estonia will be represented by Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna.
