Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna met Latvian Minister of Justice Edvards Smiltēns and Lithuanian Minister of Justice Rita Tamašunienė in Tallinn today, 24 August. The meeting focused on holding Russia accountable for its aggression against Ukraine and for international crimes, and on the need to ensure that these crimes do not go unpunished. The ministers also discussed migration-related issues and projects of shared regional importance, including Rail Baltic.
“Today, on Ukraine’s Independence Day, our message is clear: Ukrainians have the right to their freedom and their future. Russia’s aggression and international crimes must have consequences. Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania will continue to support Ukraine together and work to ensure that Russia is held accountable for its actions,” Foreign Minister Tsahkna said.
The ministers also discussed Belarus’s instrumentalisation of migration and the resulting pressure on the region. According to Tsahkna, the use of migration as a means of exerting pressure is unacceptable, and Estonia will continue to work closely with Latvia and Lithuania on this issue.
Regarding Rail Baltic, the ministers emphasised the importance of close cooperation between Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Joint action by the three countries is essential both to advance the project and to defend their shared interests within the European Union.
