According to Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna, the recently reached ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran is a welcome step that creates the basis for negotiations on a truce and, through this, for achieving lasting peace in the region.
“It is in the interests of both Europe and the wider world, in terms of security and the economy, that hostilities in the Middle East come to an end. We expect that the ceasefire agreement will enable the continuation of diplomatic negotiations between the parties, the stabilisation of the situation and the achievement of lasting peace in the region,” Tsahkna said.
“It is extremely important to ensure the Strait of Hormuz remains open in order to restore this vital maritime route for global trade and for oil and gas exports from the Gulf countries,” the foreign minister said.
“Lasting stability in the Middle East and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz are also important in the context of Russia’s war of aggression, as improved availability of energy resources from the Middle East would lead to lower oil prices and thus reduce the revenues that Russia uses to continue its aggression against Ukraine.”
