Today 17 June, Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna participated in a
video meeting of the European Union’s foreign ministers to discuss the escalation of events between Iran and Israel and the role of the European Union in easing tensions in the Middle East.
“Estonia is closely monitoring the military escalation between Israel and Iran and considers it important for the European Union to be in close contact with the countries of the region and international allies in order to help alleviate further tensions and prevent the wider escalation of the conflict in the Middle East,” Foreign Minister Tsahkna said.
According to the foreign minister, a continued commitment to finding a diplomatic solution is crucial for ensuring the region’s security.
“It is regrettable that Iran has not complied with its international obligations regarding the development of its nuclear programme and has not cooperated sufficiently to achieve a nuclear agreement through peaceful negotiations. Estonia hopes, however, that negotiations will continue,” Tsahkna said.
