Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna welcomed the results of the parliamentary elections held in Armenia, in which the pro-Western Civil Contract party, which supports regional peace, secured a majority.
“The Armenian people sent a clear signal that they wish to continue on the path of peace, strengthen relations with European countries and the European Union, and shape an open, democratic and pro-Western future,” Tsahkna said. “I also congratulated my colleague, Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, and wished him strength, success and every good fortune in the future.”
The Foreign Minister commended Armenian society and the electoral authorities for their ability to ensure democratic elections despite extensive Russian influence activities and economic and political pressure. “The Armenian people were not deterred by threats, and Russian pressure had the opposite effect,” said Tsahkna. “Parties representing democratic values received a strong mandate from voters, while pro-Russian forces were defeated. I congratulate the people of Armenia.”
According to Tsahkna, the victory of pro-Western forces will also give new momentum to bilateral relations between Estonia and Armenia. “Our cooperation has intensified significantly in recent years,” he noted. “This is also reflected in the opening of Estonia’s new embassy in Yerevan in early April.”
This spring, the foreign ministers of Estonia and Armenia signed a memorandum of cooperation that will help deepen bilateral cooperation even further.
