The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia is observed today 17 May. Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said that this day reminds us that
although marriage equality has been valid in Estonia for two years, we must continue to work to end discrimination and persecution on the basis of a person’s gender identity or sexual orientation.
“The rainbow flag raised on the main building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and our foreign representations symbolises a clear principle: no one should experience discrimination, exclusion, bullying or violence because of their sexual orientation or gender identity,” Foreign Minister Tsahkna emphasised. “The promotion and protection of the rights of the LGBTQI+ community, including their freedom of expression, association and assembly, both at home and on the international stage, is an important part of Estonia’s foreign policy,” the minister said. “The right to love and self-expression must be ensured for everyone.”
Estonia is a founding member of the Equal Rights Coalition, founded in 2016 to protect the rights of LGBTQI+ persons and currently chaired by Spain and Colombia.
