Estonia takes over as the lead nation of the Tallinn Mechanism

Today 31 October, Estonia took over from Germany as the lead nation of the Tallinn Mechanism for the next six months. The aim of the Mechanism is to join partners in supporting Ukraine’s cyber capabilities in both the military and civilian domain.

In a video meeting with the representatives of Germany’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Estonian Ambassador at Large for Cyber Diplomacy Tanel Sepp thanked his colleagues for their work and affirmed it was a great honour for Estonia. “Estonia is one of the initiators of the Tallinn Mechanism and it has been an active participant. The name of the Mechanism is not accidental and we are glad the position of the lead nation has rotated back to Estonia. Russia is waging war against Ukraine in cyberspace as well and Ukraine is in need of serious help on cybersecurity. The Tallinn Mechanism is currently the largest cooperation platform for international donors, through which dozens of projects have been launched with the authorities of Ukraine,” Sepp said.

Estonia with Ukraine, the Netherlands, Canada, Poland, France, Sweden, Germany, Denmark, USA and United Kingdom decided to create a system aimed at amplifying the cyber support of donors to Ukraine on civilian matters. The plan composed on 30 May 2023 in Tallinn by all participating states was launched on 20 December 2023, and the system was named the Tallinn Mechanism after the location of its initial meeting. Italy recently joined the Tallinn Mechanism, and NATO and the EU participate as observers.
