Estonia allocates nearly €140 000 to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Lebanon

Today 24 October, Undersecretary for Economic and Development Affairs Mariin Ratnik attended a high-level conference in support of Lebanon in Paris, organised by President of France Emmanuel Macron. At the conference, Estonia announced it would contribute nearly €140 000 to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Lebanon.

“Estonia is following the expanding conflict in the Middle East with concern, as it has caused an unacceptable number of civilian casualties and immense suffering,” Undersecretary Ratnik said. “Military action in Lebanon has caused major damage to infrastructure. Nearly 1.2 million people, including 400 000 children, are in need of humanitarian aid, having been forced to leave their homes. Lebanon’s government has submitted a request for aid to the international community to deal with the humanitarian crisis. Main needs involve shelter, such as mattresses, blankets, healthcare, food and hygiene packs, but also cash assistance,” she said.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs decided to allocate €138 358 to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Lebanon. The contribution will go to the Ministry’s strategic partners based on the proposals for action submitted by them. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is allocating €55 000 to the Estonian Refugee Council for multi-purpose cash assistance for internally displaced people, and €83 358 to NGO Mondo for food, hygiene and winterisation packs and providing psychological support. In total, more than 750 families are receiving support in central and southern Lebanon.

In total, €1 billion in financial support was pledged at the conference.
