Dear journalists
Here is a comment by Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna’s comment on the situation in Iran: The Iranian people currently have a real opportunity to shape their future. People across the country are peacefully expressing their legitimate desire to live in freedom and dignity in a society that respects fundamental rights.
We have consistently called on the Iranian authorities to respect the fundamental rights of their people and to stop using force against civilians. The arrest of peaceful protesters, deaths and all forms of violence are unacceptable. We demand the immediate release of all peaceful demonstrators and the swift and full restoration of internet connectivity, so that people have access to information and are able to make their voices heard freely.
Estonia supports European Union sanctions against those responsible for serious human rights violations, nuclear proliferation, and Iran’s support for Russia’s war against Ukraine. We also support designating the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation, in order to send a clear and unequivocal message about the consequences of the regime’s brutal actions.
