Comment by Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna on the presentation of the letter of ratification by Ukraine for joining the Rome Statute
“I welcome Ukraine’s step today to present its letter of ratification of the Rome Statute to the UN. Ukraine has completed a long and time-consuming journey to ratify the Rome Statute and Estonia is glad that Ukraine is about to reach its destination and become the 125th member of the International Criminal Court in January 2025. By enforcing the Rome Statute, Ukraine is reaffirming its unwavering commitment to international law and fighting impunity. Ukraine becoming a State Party to the International Criminal Court is also an important step in Ukraine’s path towards European Union membership. Together, we must continue the work Ukraine started on establishing a special tribunal for the crime of aggression, and hold Russia’s leadership to account for the crimes committed in the course of its aggression on Ukraine’s territory. Estonia stands firmly with Ukraine.”
