On 6 and 7 October, Jonatan Vseviov, the Secretary General of the Foreign Ministry, visited Brussels, where he held meetings with NATO and the European Union to discuss strengthening European security, Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and increasing the cost of the war for Russia.
In NATO, Secretary General Vseviov met with NATO Deputy Secretary General Radmila Shekerinska, Assistant Secretary General for Defence Policy and Planning Zamir Nicholas Catsaras, and Assistant Secretary General for Operations Thomas Goffus. In addition, he met with the Permanent Representatives to NATO of the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, and Romania.
At the European Union, Vseviov held meetings with the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, Kaja Kallas; Deputy Secretary-General of the European Commission, Nils Behrndt; and Simon Mordue, Advisor to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. He also met with Pedro Lourtie, Head of Cabinet to the President of the European Council, António Costa; Simonas Šatūnas, Head of Cabinet to the Commissioner for Defence and Space, Andrius Kubilius; and Michael Hager, Head of Cabinet to Valdis Dombrovskis, Commissioner for Economy and Productivity, Implementation and Simplification.
The meetings focused on discussions on strengthening NATO’s deterrence and defence posture and pressure on Russia to end the war, including by imposing additional sanctions and mobilising Russia’s frozen assets. Further economic and military support for Ukraine and Ukraine’s progress towards EU membership were also discussed.
